When I first saw a photograph of a this statue I knew it was going to be my next piece. This is one of the six smaller Buddhas which surrounds the "Tian Tan Big Buddha" on Lantau Island in Hong Kong near the Po Lin Monastery. The smaller Buddha statues at the base are called "The Offering of the Six Devas". Each offers the Buddha something different. The one I was inspired to create is the one holding a bowl of figs.
This piece is an original mixed media on birch wood. I wood burned the Buddha image and also used the wood burner for the shading before I added any paint. The Buddha and the background are done in watercolor paint. The cherry blossoms on the tree are done in acrylic and oil paint.
I added gold leaf to her jewelry and sanded the gold a bit to make it look aged.
I then sealed it with 8 coates of varnish.
Custom frame added, shown in last 2 photos.
This piece is 4' 1" w by 2' 1" h including frame
